We're very pleased to invite all of you to join the 2nd event of our lecture series "The Internet and Social Change". Our guest speaker, Dr. Anastasia Kavada, is senior lecturer at the University of Westminster, London. Her research focuses on the links between online tools and decentralized organizing practices, democratic decision-making, and the development of solidarity and identity among participants in collective action. She has investigated a wide range of case studies, including the Global Justice Movement, Avaaz, and the Occupy movement.

Dr. Kavada's presentation will focus on the anti-austerity movements across the Mediterranean and their use of commercial digital platforms.

Biography

Dr. Kavada's research focuses on the links between online tools and decentralized organizing practices, democratic decision-making, and the development of solidarity and a sense of common identity among participants in collective action. She has investigated a wide range of case studies, including the Global Justice Movement, Avaaz, and the Occupy movement.

Dr. Kavada'sÌýwork has appeared in a variety of edited books and academic journals, such as Media, Culture & Society and Information, Communication & Society. She is currently undertaking research on the role of the internet in economic justice activism, and the Occupy Movement in particular, in the USA and the UK. This research is funded by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship. Since September 2010, Dr. Kavada has been an Assistant Editor at Media, Culture & Society.

Dr. Kavada is also on the advisory board of the International Journal of E-Politics and Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture. In September 2013, she became a Co-Convenor of the 'Internet and Politics' Standing Group of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).
