Professor Marie Breen-SmythÌýis a distinguished scholar of political violence, conflict, and international relations. Her research covers diverse areas, including human security; victim politics; the impact of armed conflict; the role of children in conflict in the US and Northern Ireland; transitional justice; and post-conflict reconstruction.
Professor Breen-Smyth has been Associate Dean and Professor in the University of Surrey;ÌýReader in International Politics in Aberystwyth University (UK); and Jennings Randolph Senior Fellow at the US Institute of Peace (Washington DC). Professor’s Smith career as both a scholar and a practitioner focused on the conflicts in Northern Ireland, the Middle East, Southern, and West Africa. Professor Breen Smith actively contributed to peace-building in the Northern Irish peace process.
Professor Marie Breen-Smyth is a founder editor of the journal Critical Studies on Terrorism, and author of many books and articles including: “Suffering, victims and survivors in the Northern Ireland Conflict: definitions, policies and politics†in European History Yearbook / Victimhood and Acknowledgement: The Other Side of Terrorism (De Gruyter Oldenbourg (Verlag); 'A critical approach: violence, ‘victims’ and ‘innocents’' (with Samantha Cooke) in Kennedy-Pipe, C. In Northern Ireland, Professor Marie Breen-Smyth established the Institute for Conflict Research and led the first comprehensive research into the effects of theÌýTroubles. She has also made two films with Northern Visions about the impact of political violence,ÌýÌý62 mins (2000) andÌýÌý59 mins (2011).
