Professor Valerie Higgins recorded a podcast on the trafficking of antiquities for the popular broadcaster History Hit, now available atÌý
The illegal trade in art and antiquities continues to hit the headlinesÌýdespite all attempts to fight it.
Even iconic world-famous museums are entangled in scandals, such as the Louvre (the former President is under police investigation for money laundering through antiquities sales), the New York Met (purchaser of many stolen artefacts, including a gold Egyptian coffin for which it paid $4 million) and the British Museum (the curator is under investigation for selling antiquities on eBay).
This podcast looks at the reasons why such a trade, while universally condemned, continues to flourish, even in the institutions that should be guardians of cultural heritage.
